ITADAKIMASU! – The Ramen Stall

0 6

A few months ago, the internet was abuzz with posts about the newly halal-certified The Ramen Stall. Every other person I know was sharing the joyful news around Facebook, WhatsApp and Twitter. Don’t be too hard on us, but halal Japanese food in Singapore is quite hard to come by. And no, Japanese food does not just mean sushi! Japanese cuisine involves ramen, udon, tempura, teppanyaki… and the list goes on and on! And contrary to popular local belief, the Japanese actually love their meat.

My first attempt to dine at The Ramen Stall a few days after their opening with my friends did not come to fruition as the place was jam packed, and the lines were ridiculously long! Of course I forgot the fact that the entire Singaporean Malay population would flock to the newest halal-certified restaurant in town. Thankfully, working at Halalfoodhunt has its perks.

So last week, the team sat in at The Ramen Stall to taste their latest menu. I’m not particularly crazy over Japanese food (but gimme sushi anytime and I’ll love you forever), so I came to The Ramen Stall with almost zero knowledge in Japanese food.

The ramen broth is cooked for 30 hours for the chicken bones and meat to be disintegrated and melted into the soup. Dubbed the ultimate comfort food, the broth is flavorful, milky with a kick of spices at the end. Cooked with love and no preservatives or MSG added, it’s no wonder The Ramen Stall only operates when the sun goes down. Apart from keeping the supper club tradition alive, being open from 5pm to 6am gives the kitchen crew more time to prepare the delicious array of Japanese food for their customers.

The ramen noodles is cooked to perfection, al dente and springy and not starchy at all. A personal favorite would be the beef ramen as well as the volcano ramen. The volcano ramen’s little secret consists of a tablespoon of chili sauce, lovingly termed The Sambal by us, which is sure to spice up the rest of your night there.

Some of the dishes that stood out for the night were the teppanyaki beef and torched beef sushi. We were also served some potato salad, smoked duck rice and the ever favourite grilled edamame. The teppanyaki beef was succulent, juicy yet grilled to perfection with an almost crisp outer layer. Plus, the deep flavours of the black pepper enhanced the taste of the meat which really did not need much seasoning.

After much deliberation and consideration, the Halalfoodhunt team came to a unanimous decision on the winning dish for the night – the teppanyaki beef was the crowd pleaser!

It’s set! We are definitely coming back with other family and friends for some good old Japanese supper if we’re around the Bugis and Arab Street area.
