Hello Kitty Orchid Garden Cafe will be closing on Feb 9 with last round of tea parties
Say Bye Bye Kitty
Hello Kitty Orchid Garden Cafe will close its doors permanently from February 8 2019.
Besides being Singapore’s first Hello Kitty cafe, it’s also the world’s first Hello Kitty cafe which operates for 24 hours. According to Channel News Asia, the cafe, which is Halal-Certified, is closing is due to the end of their licence and partnership with Sanrio Co Ltd.
A few halal food outlets have closed at Changi Airport recently, including KFC at Viewing Mall on Level 3 of Terminal 1, and Pastamania at Basement 2 of Terminal 3. Joining this is Hello Kitty Orchid Garden cafe at Terminal 3.
Singaporeans’ craze with Hello Kitty
Hello Kitty remains a well loved icon which many will queue up for hours for. For some it’s a keepsake and for others, it’s to resell for a higher value online.
In January 2000, Singaporeans were struck with Hello Kitty fever at McDonald’s. Thousands of people would turn up to buy the toys with the Extra Value Meals, with crowds forming as early as sunrise, and in some instances, the night before. McDonald’s were still releasing Hello Kitty in 2014 when they were already online, and guess what? Their website would crash.
Well at least they’re making most of their farewell. Knowing that Hello Kitty fans will probably be crazy for their collectibles, the cafe is choosing a more gradual departure and celebrating the goodbye instead of immediately bringing down its shutters.
Farewell Tea with Hello Kitty
There will be a series of farewell tea party with Hello Kitty-themed food happening over the December weekends (December 8 to 9, and 15-16).
The tea is served with canapes, gelatos and coolers. They will get limited edition Orchids For You Hello Kitty figurines worth $98, and Thank You Cards autographed by the iconic cat. According to the cafe, you won’t be able to get this anywhere else.
There will also be lucky draws where fans can stand a chance to win home furniture from the cafe, like the Hello Kitty dining table set from the cafe.
The tea session costs $138 SGD for two people. Tickets can be bought online at Peatix.
